GST increase in good, but...

Sigh, I knew it would come right after the elections. But I never expected it to be so fast. Well, GST increase is overall not a bad thing in economic sense, with the increase in government revenue, you can expect more government spending and support in other areas such as elderly benefits, 3M, infrastructure and etc.... Yeah, and also, GOVERNMENT SALARY.

My main point of this entry is not to highlight my grumblings about the increase in GST, a mere 2% increase is really not much, considering the fact that our neighbours all have higher tax rates. However, I think it will all end up in the increase in GOVERNMENT SALARY. Y so?

Well, if u guys realized, everytime towards the end of the year, government will report +ve growth, therefore, it will be justifiable for them to rec'd year end bonus. So imagine this, when u increase in taxes, and assuming that consumer spending is inelastic because of this small increase, the economy as a whole will be better off, and thus lead to the increase in govt salary.

Obviously, if the economy turn for the better, the government should be rewarded, then again, if they are all highly committed and sincerely individuals who are willing to serve the country, why should $$$ be a concern. I'm always thought that passion should be over monetary values, then why bother giving them and increase in pay.

The government always say, SG is free from corruption. I totally agree with it, but with that kinda pay the politicians get, who will wanna be corrupted. Just look at the PM's salary, it is so much higher than US pres. The govt allwaiz says, give peanuts, you get monkey. Are you trying to say that US pres is a monkey, well, maybe this is true (to a certain extend everyone think bush is one), however about the rest of us....?? Aren't we all paid peanuts, does that mean that we are all monkeys?

The best part is that the PM highlighted that the lower n middle income will not be affected, and for the higher income, they will be affected the most. Oh well, just look at it this way. The govt who will be paid bonus estimated to be 100k (trying to be conservative here), they will only be affected if they want to buy stuff, and well, with an increase in salary and bonuses, which is definitely more than 7% why would I even be worried about the 7%.

Overall, I feel the tax is a good move, the economy and the people will be able to benefit from this, and what will be a better move is the volunterism of the govt reducing their own salary, because at the end of the day, isn't the increase in taxes trying to reduce the income gap, so why dun they do a deliberate pay cut on themselves, this way, we dun need to make everyone suffer, just the "elities" will do. =p

Can u imagine that...PM of SG still earns so much more than the Pres of USA. haha, now this is the food for thought on why is this justifiable....
