Bruges, Belgium
Paul highly recommended Bruges to me, and I must say it was quite nice, at least from the pictures. It is a small city with only 2 major streets. What was interesting about this Bruges trip was with the couchsurfing host (Steven) more than the city itself.
First, when we arrived, he welcomed us with Kreik, because he saw my msn nick the day before about the cherry beer. And we went on to discuss about his travel and how he is so into Latinas. Lolx. He is (apparently) going to marry either one of the 2 Brazilians, 1 Colombian, or 1 Chilean. Looks like there is one who long list of Latinas waiting for him. He even showed us the pictures of the girls…gosh, I wished I have better luck like him. =p
Then he drove us to the Netherland and Belgium border for Mussels galore. For 14.95 euros, we have free flow of mussels and bread. It was so good and really worth it. Then when he was driving back, guess what, there was a road block and the police stopped him and requested him to do a test, and he failed (he have been drinking the whole day). Got a fine of 500 to 1000 euros slapped on his face. Well, the good thing is I pass the test, and I’m able to drive his car and him home. This was an adventure for me as is my virgin trip with a left hand drive.
The whole night Steven was so traumatized and worried that he couldn’t sleep, and he even went to puff (he already quit smoking) to relax himself. So we thought we should give him some time alone, and we decided to wander around the streets at night and got back at about 2am.
The next morning, he cooked us Mexican breakfast and then he cooked an Italian lunch. His brother Johan came and met us. He is due to work in Philippines soon. Personally, I feel that Johan was more normal than Steven.
Steven is going to Brazil in December and he hoped to get married by then (though he had already married twice) but he cannot make up his mind who he want to marry to. And he offered us to stay at his place when he is gone. He want to pass us the keys and let the whole apartment to us. We thought he is just being a typical western who usually offer something for the sake of being a polite, but he kept asking us if we really want to come, and he sincerely hope we come, so that we can have his place. So if this is not weird, then what is?
One day of Bruges is definitely more than enough, but I’m already missing the mussels and the misadventures.
